Who we are

The Goatpen Society is a social club of poets driven to provide high quality spoken word. Through poetry we strive to build a solid community and form lasting impressions using our ability to inspire, heal, and entertain. We are fueled by a passion for words, wordplay and the impact they have on people.

As a collective we strive for consistency and innovation in our craft at all times. The name Goatpen itself is a double entendre that not only reflects our creativity but also our commitment.

Benjamin The Brain

Benjamin The Brain is a prolific spoken word artist hailing from the small island of Dominica. Being raised in South Florida since a child and being well versed in African history, he is able to use his words as a beacon of Blackness connecting the diaspora. He is a gifted writer in various avenues from music to storytelling as well as a visual artist. A published author, Benjamin is a griot who uses his pen to magically bring words to life. Whether speaking on the details of Black history or testing the limits of the English language, he is able to paint vivid pictures that compel you to follow along. With a hypnotic style that is both soothing and powerful he is a poet that must be experienced to fully grasp. The creator of The Goatpen Society, Benjamin is a creative of the highest order.

A Cup Of Jo

Jodi, known as “A Cup Of Jo”, is a dynamic spoken word artist based in Broward County, Florida, with over a decade of experience captivating audiences through her powerful poetry. A talented and exceptional host, she has curated over various events from open mics and feature sets to weddings and other events. She is a founding member of The Goatpen Society. In addition to being a gifted poet and host, A Cup Of Jo is also a talented visual artist, paint instructor, model, and an amateur clothing designer and hairdresser.

Salam The Poet

Salam The Poet is a spoken word artist from the southeast side of Chicago. He has been writing poetry for over a decade. Salam uses his craft to spread dope energy through creativity, affirmation, and interaction. Salam’s talent has taken him to stages as big as Bantu Fest, 24/7 Hip Hop’s ‘Check Da Mic’, Columbia College Chicago’s ‘Manifest’, and The Broward Center for Performing Arts, to spaces as small as high school classrooms, family gatherings, and various community events. Since then, his endeavors have led him to becoming the host of his own open mic called ‘Spit Yo Peace’, Poet Laureate of the Black Archives Lyric Theater and a founding member of The Goatpen Society where he continues to use art, energy, affirmation and interaction to reach people while simultaneously creating a community safe space.

Zi

Zi, a poet known for her dynamic writing, has been blazing stages for well over 15 years. Born and raised in South Florida, she is the owner of The Bawdy Bakery. Zi wears many hats. Not only is she an amazing poet, she is also a teaching artist, educator and entrepreneur. She uses her influence and presence to empower women and the people around her. As a founding member of The Goatpen Society, Zi has spread a message of positivity and praise to all that get to experience her amazing abilities.
